Commencing the second half of the CBD Pennant season this week’s Saturday Pennant results have seen Division One return from Yea with a strong 49 shot win keeping them in 3ʳᵈ position whilst Division Two after having their second and final bye remain in 3ʳᵈ place whilst GVBD Division 6 at home recording a much-needed narrow 4 shot win against Avenel enabling them to retain top place for yet another week. Our CBD Midweek side also had their second and final bye and with results from other games played seeing them drop out of the four into fifth place and 15 points behind fourth placed Eildon with 6 more rounds to go.

CBD DIVISION 1
SEYMOUR VRI 87 (14) def Alexandra 67 (2)
Seymour VRI winning all 3 rinks were holding a 26 shot lead at the 42ⁿᵈ end break and continued on their merry way after the break to go on to recording a confidence boosting 49-shot win over Yea at Yea enabling them to strengthen their hold 3ʳᵈ place and improve their position
to be just 2 points behind 2ⁿᵈ placed Broadford on the CBD Division One ladder.

Joe Purcell’s rink of Kevin Cain, Ian Cashill and Brad Anderson found themselves in a neck and neck battle with the wily Justin Branch’s rink as they built a lead of 3 shots at the completion of the 9ᵗʰ end 8 to 5. Winning 4 of the next five ends and just conceding a single shot to Justin’s rink it was Joe’s rink moving out to a handy 7-shot lead at the 14ᵗʰ end break. Following the break, it was to be all Joe’s rink as they went on to dominate the match winning all 11 remaining ends and racing away to record a mammoth 31 shot winning margin 31 to 6.

Greg Jones rink of Phil Challis, Bill Dawe and Wayne Noonan stormed out of the blocks against winning the first four ends of their match against Arthur Parish’s rink establishing an 11-nil lead. The following 10 ends were split evenly between the two rinks however it was to be Greg’s rink extending their lead to 12 shots at the 14ᵗʰ end break 20 to 8. Following the break and with Greg’s rink winning 7 of the remaining 11 ends and adding a further 11 shots to their total over Arthur’s rink with their 4 end wins for 6 shots it was Greg’s rink proving too strong with a solid 17 shot win 31 to 14.

Mick Szczykulski’s rink of Moreno Puppa, Mario Furletti and Geoff Neal were pitted against Leif Elenius’s rink. Starting strongly including a 6 on the 3ʳᵈ end it was Mick’s rink leading by 8 shots at the 7ᵗʰ end, however by the 14ᵗʰ end break that lead had been reduced to just 7 shots. Starting poorly after the break Mick’s rink lost 4 ends in a row to find themselves trailing by 1 shot 18 to 19 after 18 ends however a 3 on the 19ᵗʰ end got them back in front 21 to 19. Again dropping 3 ends on the trot saw Mick’s rink fall behind by 2 shots with 3 ends to play 21 to 23. Scoring 4 shots on the next 2 ends allowed Mick’s rink to take a 2 shot lead into the final end of the match which resulted in a 1 shot win to Leif’s rink, however it was not enough to stop Mick’s rink from winning the match by the narrowest of margins, 1 shot, 25 to 24.

GVBD DIVISION 6
SEYMOUR VRI 46 (12) def Avenel 42 (2)
A win against Avenel would allow Seymour VRI to remain top of the ladder for another week. With one rink up by 7 shots and the other and the other trailing by 5 shots at the 28ᵗʰ end break it was anyone’s match to win. Over the remaining 22 ends the margin remained tight with no side able to score more than 2 shots on any given end. With a final result of one rink winning by 7 shots and the other narrow losers by 3 shots it was eventually a 4 shot overall win to Seymour VRI and retention of top of the Division 6 ladder for another week.

Garry Bester’s rink of Alan Walton, Josh Austin and Wayne Flint after dropping a two on the first end against Norm Billingsley’s rink came out strongly winning the next 5 ends to establish a nine shot lead 11 to 2 after 6 ends. With both sides winning 4 each of the next 8 ends it was Garry’s rink whose lead had been reduce by 2 shots to a 7-shot margin going into the 14ᵗʰ end break with scores being 18 to 11. Following the break end scores were either singles or two’s so whilst Garry’s rink won 5 of the remaining 11 ends adding a further 8 shots, they managed to keep Norm’s rink to just 8 shots on their 6 end wins. The final margin after 25 ends was a comfortable 7 shot win for Garry’s rink 26 to 19.

Jane Wilson returned as skipper with her reshaped rink of Terry Dowell, Terry Flynn and Stuart Crockett who were matched against George Pedler’s rink. After scoring a 2 on the first end Jane’s rink lost their way over the next 5 ends to be trailing by 6 shots 2 to 8 after 6 ends. With both sides winning 4 ends each over the next 8 ends Jane’s rink had closed the gap to 5 shots at the 14ᵗʰ end break 10 to 15. After the break
Jane’s rink lost the next 5 ends as George’s rink built an 11-shot lead at the 19ᵗʰ end, however Jane’s rink then won the next four ends to trail by a single shot with 2 ends remaining. Unfortunately, Jane’s rink dropped singles on each of those two remaining ends to eventually succumb to a narrow 3 shot loss 20 to 23.
